So what are your 2020 goals?
According to research, people’s top three New Year resolutions are: lose weight, improve finances, exercise…
Well, I can’t help you with one and three, but I’m sure I can lend a hand with number two.
And what’s more, you’re likely to stick to resolution number two long after the diet has failed and the gym card is gathering dust in the drawer!
Before work truly gathers pace and there are still cold dark evenings to fill, this time of year is wonderful for digging out all your documents and looking at the state of your finances.
Particularly if you spent a lot over the festive period, there is always a good case for seeing if you can save some money.
For example, your mortgage.
It’s a good time to check whether a fixed-rate deal you took out a few years back comes to an end this year. If it does, it’s time to see what new deals are available. And believe me, there are some good rates to be had.
Or maybe your fixed-rate deal has already come to an end and your mortgage is on your lender’s standard variable rate. If it is, then you can definitely save some money straight away by switching to a cheaper, fixed-rate loan.
And what about your insurance?
Some policies may be coming up for renewal and you might be able to save yourself a few bob by switching insurer.
Also, look out those renewal notices and make sure the policies still fit your circumstances.
If you’ve got married, had a baby or started your own business, you might want to take a look at your life insurance to cover your loved ones and some income protection to cover your new job,
And if Santa was kind, are those new gadgets covered by your home insurance? Similarly, does your house insurance still cover the cost of your home, if the value has risen? Being under-insured can be costly if you make a claim, as you might not get what you hope for.
Might not be as exciting as a trip to the gym, but you’ll feel the benefits if not in terms of money saved, certainly in terms of peace of mind.
At this time of year, I offer a free financial health check to help you sort out your money.
