Start the new year with a finance health check

Well, have you made a list then?

Those New Year resolutions – most of which you will have abandoned by the middle of the month.

January is typically a time when, during the festive break, we have time to think about the things that we have put off or forgotten to do and make a pledge to tackle in the year ahead.

I’ve got some you might not have thought about.

When was the last time you checked your insurance documents?

Ok, ok, it doesn’t sound very exciting does it, but if you dig out that last renewal notice you can check exactly what you are or aren’t covered for. It might come as a surprise if all those shiny new gadgets aren’t covered by your contents insurance or your house is now worth far more than you have it insured for. Being under-insured can be costly if you make a claim, as you might not get what you hope for.

And what has changed this year?

Have you got married, had a child, started your own business or even been ill?

All of these things should prompt you to take stock. Have you got life insurance to cover your loved ones if something happens to you? Do you need income protection in case you aren’t able to work and pay the bills?

And what about your mortgage? Is it still sitting on your lender’s standard variable rate? If so, that will definitely be costing you hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds extra a year. Time to do something about that – maybe a long fixed rate to get you past all those Brexit worries.

Or maybe you know that at some time this year your existing fixed-term mortgage deal comes to an end. No better time than the present to start looking at what you might switch to next and how much money you might save.

So come on, instead of reaching for another Celebrations chocolate, dig out those dusty documents and get things in order as 2019 gets under way.

At this time of year I offer a free financial health check to ask the questions you need to ask.
